Iraqi Values

The man who threw a shoe at former president G. W. Bush was sentenced to three years in prison. A little extreme, perhaps.

Regardless, he’s proud of his actions. This brings me to think more about what type of values the Iraqi people have. They throw shoes at democratically elected leaders instead of engaging them in debates. And when a girl falls in love with a person of the wrong clan or religion, the entire village unites in brutally murdering her with rocks and cement blocks, all while the police happily watch.

I think the problem behind the war in Iraq was not the intent. Spreading democracy is a good idea. The problem is that this culture is too backwards and too primitive to be ready for a liberal democracy. Trying to import it there was lunacy, doomed to fail before it even began. Same goes for Afghanistan, where they throw acid at little schoolgirls for trying to learn how to read.

Perhaps in a few hundred years they will be advanced enough to be ready for democracy and personal liberty.

  1. Yes, I agree, leave them alone, and let them stay in the darkness for a couple of hundreds of years, and then we can start talk to them.
