Hypnotized by Government Television

Just a quick post, since I’ve been busy lately. Swedes have taken a poll regarding their impressions of various TV channels. SVT received the best impressions of all, a channel run by the Swedish government with the massive funds from a tax on every Swede with a TV.

It’s no surprise, really. Aside from a budget several times larger than any competitor, SVT has also enjoyed a monopoly on TV-broadcasting that lasted from its inception until the mid 1990’s. Anyone else trying to broadcast on the airwaves was fined or tossed in jail. The ruling Social Democrats even briefly contemplated a ban on satellite dishes to prevent foreign channels in the mid 1980’s.

As such, we have entire generations of Swedes who honestly, sincerely believe that the socialist propaganda they watch every evening is objective, quality news coupled with family programming with wholesome values, as well as neutral debate shows.

It’s tragic, really, but there’s nothing to be done. Only time can sort out this mess.
